Meet Our Special Guest:

Menachem Kalmanson

October 7, 2023.  A day of unspeakable infamy and evil. And a day of almost incomprehensible bravery and selflessness.

As Kibbutz Be’eri was overrun by a savage onslaught coming from just over the Gaza border, word of the village’s desperation and devastation crackled over radios and telephones. It wasn’t just the valiant soldiers of the I.D.F. who responded to the horror; intrepid civilians and volunteers from across the land drove heedlessly to the site of the slaughter to do whatever they could to help their countrymen.  Among them were brothers Elchanan and Menachem Kalmanson and their nephew Itiel Zohar.

Team Elchanan, driving an armored truck a soldier had given them, drove from house to house, where they encountered unimaginable challenges inside:

Neutralizing attackers still hiding within. Rescuing children who had witnessed the brutal murder or kidnapping of their parents. Breaking into “safe rooms” to rescue the inhabitants from homes already in flames. They filled their vehicle with survivors, taking them to security, and then returned again and again, to new houses and new horrors.

In one such house, Team Elchanan met fierce armed resistance, and Elchanan was mortally wounded.

In March, 2024, the special Israel Prize for “Civilian Heroism” was awarded to Menachem Kalmanson and Itiel Zohar for their valor in the Battle of Kibbutz Be’eri.

Please join us on Tuesday, July 30th to meet this Hero of Israel and to thank him for his selfless courage and bravery.  And may the memory of his brother, Elchanan Kalmanson, be for a blessing.

Am Yisrael Chai!
